De l’anglo-normand demeyne, demene, issu de l’ancien français demeine, demaine, demeigne, domaine (« puissance ») (qui a donné en français domaine), un nom tiré d’un adjectif, issu du latin dominicus (« appartenant à un seigneur ou un maître »), dérivé de dominus (« maître, propriétaire »).
