- If a person were suddenly asked what “Ghoughphtheightteeau” spelled, the chances are that in the flurry of the moment he would say he didn’t know; yet Prof. Knowlton, of San Francisco, says it spells “potato.” He spells the word according to the following rule: “Gh stands for p, as you’ll find from the last letters in hiccough. Ough stands for o, as in dough. Fhth stands for t, as in phthisic. Eigh stands for a, as in neighbor. Tte stands for t, as in gazette, and eau stands for o, as in beau. […]” — (D. L.
