- De l’indo-européen commun *eĝhi-[1] (« hérisson »), qui donne Igel en allemand, ježek en tchèque, etc. Apparenté[1] au grec ancien χήρ, khêr, ἐχῖνος, ekhinos, comme en attestent les synonymes herĭcĭus, erĭcĭus (→ voir -icus) et herinaceus, erinaceus (→ voir -inus), le mot a intrinsèquement une sorte de génitif que les linguistes décomposent en *eĝhi-nos où le radical serait *angʷ(h)i (« ver, serpent » → voir anguis) et le sens étymologique, celui de « (animal) qui mange les vers, les serpents » → voir serpentaire.
