Étymologie

Provient d’une forme qui a donné naissance en vieux-slavon aux mots багръ bagr’ (ἁλουργίς) et багрити bagriti (φοινίσσειν) « peindre en pourpre », багрѣница bagrienitsa (πορφύρα), en ukrainien ба́гор bagor, en biélorusse ба́гра bagra, en russe багря́ный « de couleur pourpre », багри́ть « peindre en pourpre », en bulgare ба́гря bagria « je peins en rouge », mais aucun mot dans les autres langues slaves. Ce mot est d’origine incertaine. Certains ont tenté d’établir un lien avec le mot néerlandais baggaert, « limon, vase », le mot irlandais búal « l’eau » ou le mot russe багно́ « marécage rouge » ; d’autres ont pensé au mot bulgare божу́р « coquelicot ». Une hypothèse erronée l’a fait relier au gothique fagrs ou à l’ancien haut-allemand fagar « beau » ; au départ, on pensait aussi au mot slave *pogrъ. Mais il convient plutôt de le rapprocher du grec ancien φώγω « je grille », du vieil haut-allemand bahhan « brûler » et du mot biélorusse бага́ть « couleur ».
