- Mentionné dans le Catholicon (bihan, bichan).
- À comparer avec les adjectifs bychan en gallois, byghan en cornique, beagán en irlandais (sens identique).
- Diminutif en -an dérivé d’un radical *bih-, *bich-, continué par le gallois bych et l’irlandais beag, issu du celtique *bekkos.[1]
