Résidence

A Wikimedian in residence is a professional role made possible thanks to a deal between several structures in order to enhance a collaborative online project or add data to it. The legal form may vary, and this one will consist in an internship.

The Wikimédia France association and the Délégation générale à la langue française et aux langues de France (DGLFLF) will share the funding. The internship will be hosted by the International Institute for Francophonie (2IF) in Lyon, for the months of May, June, July and August 2021, within the team of the Dictionnaire des francophones.

Context

The Dictionnaire des francophones is an online tool filled with several lexicographical open resources. It is founded by the Délégation générale à la langue française et aux langues de France (a division of the French Ministry for Culture), realized by the Institut international pour la Francophonie (International institute for Francophonie), in Lyon. It is designed by Noé. A scientific council is backing the project, lead by Bernard Cerquiglini. Lyokoï is part of it as a member of Wikimedia France.

As part of this project, a first residence was implemented in 2020 in order to enhance the Wiktionnaire's content and to facilitate its integration within the Dictionnaire des francophones. The account Seb en Résidence (2IF) was created on this occasion, and its many minor edits allowed a global improvement of the quality of the Wiktionnaire's pages.

In 2021, the Dictionnaire des francophones will display recordings and will thus be plugged to Lingua Libre. The perfect occasion to build a new residence!

Staff

This arrangement is authored by these three persons, based on their needs, wills and skills. WikiLucas00 is doing a Master’s degree in Industries de la langue [Natural Language Processing] in Grenoble (France), and he is very active in Lingua Libre and French Wiktionary since a couple of years. He combines technical skills and the knowledge of the tool.

Roadmap

Lingua Libre

Tasks planed for this internship:

  • Protocol design for the recording of linguistic diversity, based on trial sessions with volunteers including international students from the International Institute for the Francophonie, in order to improve the help pages of Lingua Libre and to integrate the printed user guide of the Dictionnaire des francophones.
  • Creation of a tool for suggesting lists of terms to be registered adapted to people wishing to register, in order to enable better collection of the diversity of pronunciations. The tool will take the form of a short questionnaire to target people's characteristics and interests.
  • Participation in the reflection on the management of participative contributions concerning audio, to improve the organisation of human re-listening and to prepare the development of algorithms for anomaly detection that will facilitate decision making. The technical part could lead to the creation of a prototype of a mass replay tool inspired by the one in place in the Mozilla Common Voice project.

Benefits

  • For Lingua Libre: improved Help pages and protocols for collecting from others, and improved technical tools
  • For the Wiktionnaire: more and better quality recordings, more diversity in the accents represented
  • For the Wikimedian in Residence: putting his skills at the service of a project that is close to his heart while developing them in a fostering environment.
  • For the Dictionnaire des francophones: more and better quality recordings
  • For the partners in this project: more ease in setting up recording sessions thanks to tailor-made protocols for several contexts.
