- Peut-être emprunté au polonais hetman[1] qui donne aussi гетман, getman ; mais Brückner[2] réfute cet étymon, lui préférant une origine turcique odaman[1]. Les premières attestations (en polonais) étant wataman, on peut aussi rapprocher ce mot de ватага, vataga (« gang, troupe »), apparenté au turc otağ (« tente »).
