De l’anglo-saxon -lich, même sens.

• Le suffixe est apparenté à la particule -like. Par exemple : the tree-like bush (the bush like a tree)

Suffixe

-ly /li/ adverbial

1. Indique la plupart des adverbes en anglais. Équivalent de -ment en français.
   • Strong « fort » - strongly « fortement »
2. (Rare) Indique les adjectifs en anglais. Ce sens conserve la signification de like : womanly = like a woman ; manly = like a man ; neighborly = like a (good) neighbor ; friendly = like a (good) friend ; brotherly = like a (good) brother ; gentlemanly, sisterly, fatherly, motherly, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, costly, lively, miserly, orderly, sickly, heavenly, etc.
   • King « roi » - kingly « en rapport avec les rois »

Note

• Kingly veut dire like a king (comme un roi). Mais l'adjectif apparenté à king est royal. De la même manière, on a les adjectifs masculine (manly), feminine (womanly), sibling (brotherly or sisterly), fraternal (brotherly), maternal (motherly), paternal (fatherly). On a aussi les formes adjectivales : of a friend, of a father, of a mother, etc.

• On dit gentlemanly, mais ladylike.
